About this experience

Step back in time to the communist era with a ticket to the Budapest Retro Interactive Museum. Enjoy discovering what daily life was truly like in the Eastern Block behind the Iron Curtain.

Experience the Budapest Retro Interactive Museum's three fascinating floors showcasing everyday life during the communist era of the 1970s and 80s. You'll see thousands of real items from that time arranged in themed rooms that show the more relaxed side of Hungary's "goulash communism" era. Discover how school education worked, when students wore distinctive red pioneer scarves and sang propaganda songs, while still enjoying vibrant community activities and summer camps at Lake Balaton. Step into a period news studio equipped with two authentic, functioning TV cameras where you can read original news broadcasts from the communist era. The museum features nine motorcycles and three renovated vintage Soviet cars, including a distinctive black Volga. The highlight is a Soviet-made Lada police car that has been transformed into a simulator, allowing you to patrol a virtual version of Gazdagrét—an iconic Budapest housing estate known for its endless rows of identical apartment buildings. In 1980, Hungary became the seventh nation to send an astronaut to space as part of a Soviet mission. A dedicated room showcases this historic journey including a spacesuit and distinctively Hungarian folk art-patterned canned goulash that was presented as a gift to the Salyut 6 space station crew. The basic design principle was "functionality first." Square apartment blocks appeared throughout cities, containing units with the same carpets, furniture, fridges, and TV sets. You can tour a typical apartment containing everyday household items from this period. Try on vintage outfits through our interactive mirror—perfect for Instagram-worthy photos! After your visit, enjoy our retro bistro with jukebox offering coffee, drinks and pastries, plus browse our souvenir selection.

It was very nice, dynamic experience and interactive, we enjoyed it. I recommend it if you are curious. It’s colourful, diverse and interesting. I would recommend it more for photos and “for the eyes”, because for the informations it was not very satisfying, as we could’ve understand many things as they were not written in English as well, or just because there was little informations displayed. Certainly there’s many things to see. We are tourists, therefore we don’t know the language - indeed, there were also English written descriptions / informations, but overall many of the things were written in hungarian or either some of the informations not described at all. Some of the games that were displayed were were not able to play, they were not really functional, and some other were just in Hungarian and we didn’t understand. Some screens were not working that good that even tho other languages were displayed we couldn’t choose them.
