About this experience
Take a full-day trip from Mexico City to admire Taxco, a unique colonial town famous for its silver works. Take advantage of the unique opportunity to explore an ancient pre-Hispanic mine.
Discover the colonial history of Mexico City on this day tour with an expert local guide. Choose to visit an ancient mine and learn about the lives and work of the inhabitants of the city before the Spanish came. Have the opportunity to descend in an authentic mining elevator and travel through a beautifully illuminated 150-meter tunnel, appreciating the sparkling of the walls due to the precious metals still found in them. Inside get to know how the ancient settlers carried out the mining work, what tools they used to extract the metals, and what techniques they used to find the coveted metals. Coming out of the bowels of the earth, admire a mural by the muralist Juan O'Gorman, who, out of his love for this beautiful city, worked with materials from the region a beautiful mural dedicated to the last Aztec emperor. Start your trip in downtown Mexico City where you'll take a scenic drive to the “silver city”. The city is nestled on a hillside with winding cobblestone streets, tile-roofed buildings, cozy squares, and a strong Old World ambiance that has survived through hundreds of years. Visit one of Mexico’s grandest churches, Santa Prisca. It was built in 1759 by French immigrant Jose de la Borda who literally stumbled upon a huge silver spring. Taxco is world-renowned for its silver mines and artisan jewelry shops, offering the opportunity to admire and purchase beautiful handcrafted pieces made by Mexican artisans. Enjoy a delicious traditional lunch at a local restaurant during your time in Taxco (if the option is selected). Discover an ancient pre-Hispanic mine, and learn how the ancient inhabitants extracted precious metals before the conquest.

FYI: The pickup/drop-off location listed at booking WILL NOT be honored (total bait and switch). Ours was changed at 9pm the night before, and the real pickup/drop-off was in Centro near the Zócalo -- not Condesa like our ticket said. Book and budget time accordingly. This tour had highlights (Taxco and our excellent driver), but there’s room for improvement. We upgraded and paid $188 (vs $60 transport-only) solely for a Condesa pickup. The night before, they moved it 20 minutes away and stopped responding. We spent $40 on taxis. For a 6am departure, that’s frustrating. You don’t stop for real food until 1pm -- bring snacks and WATER (it was hot) Cuernavaca was underwhelming (three churches). In Taxco, we skipped the fourth church and explored the markets instead — total hidden gems. The itinerary should diversify beyond churches. Driver was fantastic and very safe. We felt fine in Taxco despite prior safety concerns. We returned to CDMX around 7:30pm, so plan dinner accordingly.
